Waiting can create anxiety, particularly if people have other life events coinciding. It’s important to create a secure yet relaxed space for patients, slightly away from the main place of work – that is, the dispensing area – to maintain a degree of confidentiality, yet close enough to engage with reception so people can be seen and acknowledged if there is a delay or information needs to be conveyed. Movable seating set out an appropriate distance apart is helpful, so people with disability can make adjustments or children can sit close to their carer. A small selection of toys or a children’s activity can be a familiar engaging interaction.
