How do leaders and managers differ? Helen Bird talks to some of the professionals leading the way in optometry.

Historically, perspectives have differed on what being a leader means. The early “great man” theory suggested leaders are born, not made, and require charisma, intelligence and wisdom, while transactional leadership theory states that a leader should motivate by reward or punishment.

In the context of delivering quality compassionate healthcare services, effective leadership is vital. But what does it require in optometry settings? And should managers and leaders be viewed in different ways?
