Plan for the next CPD cycle

As a new continuing professional development (CPD) cycle begins, Helen Bird explores how to get ahead and integrate learning into your practice.

Should optometrists view CPD through a new lens? Far from a tick-box exercise, it should be seen as an exercise in professional self-care, suggests Andy Miller, Head of Post-Registration at the College. “Because CPD is for you, it gets put off. We’re terrible at looking after ourselves and our development in favour of helping other people. But it should be an investment in you – or in you improving your practice for patients.”

Kathryn Marshall MCOptom, Optometry Lecturer at the University of Highlands and Islands (UHI), agrees. “It’s important to keep up to date with changes and expand your scope of practice through learning,” she says. “Prioritise learning in areas where you may not be as confident.”
