Description: This discussion workshop is aimed at optometrists with previous experience of Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT), this session will explore less common macular conditions. A good understanding of retinal layers and identifying pathology on OCT will be key in formulating a provisional diagnosis and appropriate patient management.

Domains and learning outcomes: Communication

s.2 Communicate effectively with patients
- Able to effectively communicate complex OCT findings and provisional diagnosis to the patient.
- Understand the likely management and treatment of macula conditions within the Hospital Eye Service and so be able to explain this to the patient.

s.3 Obtain valid consent
- Understand the reasons for and be able to obtain consent from the patient prior to referral for their ocular condition(s).
Clinical practice

s.5 Keep your knowledge and skills up to date
- Understands the retinal layers in relation to OCT macular scans and able to apply this to establish the diagnosis and management of macular conditions.

s.7 Conduct appropriate assessments, examinations, treatments and referrals
- Understand when undertaking an OCT scan is appropriate and when used in conjunction with other examinations able to ensure correct management for the patient and appropriate referral.
