A visual fixation: Simon Berry MCOptom

We meet Simon Berry MCOptom, a dynamic optometrist whose innovations range from equipment to assess people with learning disabilities to scanning moths’ eyes.

As the son of an optometrist, and somebody who had a detached retina himself as a child, Simon Berry MCOptom says he wasn’t so much inspired to join the profession as he followed a predetermined journey. But inspiration has certainly come since. 

For example, Simon’s self-professed tendency to be easily bored has led him to research in all types of areas – including moths’ eyes, more of which later. And more personally, with his son Max having autism spectrum disorder and global development delay, Simon has become an innovator treating people with learning disabilities. His invention, the Visual Fixation System, has recently come to market.
