Visit the College during London's Open House Festival

The College of Optometrists will be opening its doors to visitors once again for a College Open Day, organised jointly as part of the Open House London Festival and Heritage Open Days event on Sunday 15 September.

The public, members and fellows will have the opportunity to look around the College’s historic headquarters in the West End of London and visit the British Optical Association Museum featuring the world’s oldest collection of spectacles and vision aids.

The Open House London Festival, organised by the Open City architectural charity, and the UK-wide Heritage Open Days event, supported by the National Trust, attract people from all over the UK, as well as those further afield. Both events are normally held every September, during which a wide range of buildings usually closed to the public can be visited completely free of charge.

Neil Handley PhD, AMA, FRSA, Museum Curator

“Our College Open Day, promoted for us by the two heritage charities, is an annual highlight in which we can showcase our Georgian building and the collections of the British Optical Association Museum and Library.

"Our museum refurbishment is almost complete and at this year’s Open Day we are previewing the last of the display spaces to reopen, the Giles Room. There’ll also be a costumed character to greet our guests and an opportunity to view an eye-related dress from the last series of The Great British Sewing Bee, which has been lent to us for exhibition until the end of the year.

"All in all, it's a great opportunity for anyone to learn more about the wonderful world of optometry, both past and present."

The College will be open to walk-in visitors from 12pm to 5.00pm on Sunday 15 September 2024. Entrance is free of charge and there is no need to pre-book.

We look forward to welcoming you!
