New Optometric Practice Educator (OptPE) affix launching at AGM

The College is set to award the Optometric Practice Educator (OptPE) affix to a first group of optometrists at the AGM on Tuesday 29 April.

The first group of members to complete our new supervisor training have been invited to submit their reflections and take part in a supervisor-focused peer review to be awarded the OptPE affix, with commemorative certificate, by the College President, Dr Gillian Ruddock.

The College's first-ever educational affix, OptPE, is designed to recognise the dedication, expertise, and commitment of supervisors who nurture the next generation of optometrists.

Who can get the OptPE affix

The OptPE affix is available to all full and associate College members who have completed the required training, reflected on their practical experience of supervision and undertaken a College supervisory peer review.

You can find out the full eligibility requirements and how to apply for the OptPE affix.

Supporting supervisors

The OptPE affix represents one part of a suite of enhanced support and development opportunities for supervisors as we approach the launch of the first CLiP placements in July 2025. Further support includes:

  • all-new and improved training (with CPD points)
  • peer sessions for supervision
  • ongoing CPD (leadership and communication domains)
  • drop-ins with Lead Assessor
  • dedicated contact points for advice and guidance
  • online portal (for CLiP)

Changes to supervision

The Educational Training Requirements (ETR) bring increased flexibility and team working opportunities where the whole practice can be involved in supervision and have the support they need. Additional changes include:

  • newly qualified registrants can supervise (no two-year wait)
  • other ophthalmic professions will be supported to supervise within their scope of practice
  • all who supervise must be trained and supported
