Routine pre-screening may stop serious diseases slipping through the net, writes Helen Gilbert.

When locum optometrist Cemma Ramful MCOptom spotted a repeated visual field defect during a routine pre-screen on one of her apparently healthy patients, she investigated further to discover a homonymous hemianopia. It was the result – it later emerged – of an asymptomatic stroke.
