Wales increases investment in financial support and research

Welsh Government agrees additional financial support for optometry services, with new research centre to be established.

Optometry Wales have announced that, following recent contract negotiations with the Welsh Government and NHS Wales, there will be an additional £3.9m funding for optometry services in the country. Read the full press release below.

Also in Wales, Health and Care Research Wales (HCRW) has allocated Research Development Infrastructure funding to help create a Centre for Vision Services Research (CVSR) in Wales. The new centre, based at Cardiff University’s School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, will unite researchers from Cardiff University, Swansea University, Bangor University, and the University of South Wales.

The College is pleased to have supported this proposal at the application stage. Mike Bowen, Director of Knowledge and Research at The College of Optometrists, has written a letter expressing the College's support for the proposal. In addition to the benefits to eye health and social care research capacity, the CSVR will produce outputs that will be of direct benefit to members, who provide key elements of eye health in both primary and secondary care settings.

"We’re delighted to see optometry being championed in Wales with the uplift in funding for primary eye care services and optometry training in Wales, as well as the recent investment in research with the creation of a Centre for Vision Services in Wales.

The uplift of £3.9 million for optometry services in 2024-25 following recent contract negotiations between Optometry Wales, the Welsh Government and NHS Wales will help reduce the hospital waiting times for patients in Wales and improve access to specialist care as a result of the increase in funding for training for higher qualifications.

We encourage members in Wales to explore the College’s range of higher qualifications to enable them to extend their areas of care."
