Intern (Policy & Communications) (£18,180 to £22,724 per annum, pro-rata)

Salary: Ranging between £18,180 to £22,724 per annum (pro-rata) plus competitive benefits.
Contract: This is a 35 hours/5 days per week or 28 hours/4 days a week fixed term contract for up to 5 weeks.

We are looking for an intern who will join our established Policy and Strategy department. This role will assist the Policy and Public Affairs team in managing varied activities and projects. The role will also support the Marketing and Communications team with marketing and public relations activities.

Reporting to the Head of Policy and Public Affairs (line-manager) with a ‘dotted line’ reporting to the Deputy Director Marketing and Communications, you will be able to develop an understanding of health-related policy development, public affairs/influencing activities and marketing and communications through job shadowing, observation and through taking forward agreed activities and processes. 

Main responsibilities:

Policy and public affairs

  • Carrying out desk-based research into an agreed area of eye care policy to identify relevant background information, evidence and external policies
  • Supporting the drafting and design of web pages related to key areas of policy work, using agreed messaging
  • Supporting the drafting of letters or other correspondence with Westminster MPs who have an interest in eye care and other key stakeholders

Marketing and communications

  • Supporting the Marketing & Communications managers with marketing activities related to membership, social media and education to promote the policy and influence work
  • Supporting the PR & Internal Communications Manager with public relations activities, which could include research, press releases, social media posts, campaigns to further the policy and influence work
  • Shadow members of the Marketing & Communications team in attending external and internal meetings (virtual and face-to-face)

To be considered for the role, candidates will need to have experience of: 

  • Working on multiple projects or pieces of work simultaneously
  • Delivering a piece of work to an agreed deadline

In addition, you will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, competencies and skills:

  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to summarise and clearly communicate information from a range of sources
  • Good attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good knowledge of MS Office: Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Accurate keyboard skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and other professionals, patients and/or the public in writing and verbally

Additional information

  • Typical working hours at the College are 9 am to 5 pm (7 hours, excluding lunch) working five days a week. We operate a flexible working window from 8 am to 6 pm where you can vary your start and end time (working a 7 hour day). This role is flexible and can be worked either as 35 hours across 5 days a week or 28 hours across 4 days a week.
  • We also offer hybrid working (a mixture of home and office working). Typically College staff will work around 20 - 40% of their time at the workplace (whether this is the office at Craven St, or a face to face meeting, exam or event at another business related site or organisation) per week.
