The Appeals Review Panel provides an independent appeal mechanism for appeals against decisions made by the Appeals Panel to be heard.  

The Appeals Review Panel is an independent body that is the final appeals body for Scheme for Registration and Therapeutics Common Final Assessment (Independent Prescribing) candidates. The Appeals Review Panel reviews appeals or applications to extend the allotted time or restart the Scheme for Registration, as described in the Scheme for Registration regulations. 

We are recruiting: 

  • Qualified optometrists
  • Members of the College’s Education and Standards Committee

Role requirements

Applicants may be experienced College assessors, supervisors or optometrists with previous panel experience or experience with trainees. 

You must:  

  • be a practising optometrist familiar with optometric education
  • be registered with the GOC
  • be a member of the College’s Education and Standards Committee
  • have an understanding of competency-based assessment
  • have experience of sitting on assessment boards or similar
  • have experience of analysing candidate performance

Training and support will be provided by The College of Optometrists. 

Expected commitment: 

This Panel meets four times throughout the year. At least six weeks’ notice of meetings will be given of panel meetings. 

Panel members are appointed for three years and then may be extended for a further three years.   

Meetings last from one to two hours and are currently all held remotely. Panel members will be required to read materials in advance of meetings.  

Members of this group will be paid for meeting time at a rate of £237 per day.
